                   ABSTRACT

One of the effects of urban growth is the waterproofing of the soil, which reduces water infiltration
and increases surface runoff. This study analyzes the design of rain gardens as a green infrastructure
alternative for the sustainable management of rainwater in the town of Mazatlán, Guerrero.
Site analysis was carried out, reviewing bibliography and the conceptual design of a bioretention
system, including its construction process and economic evaluation. The proposed system is
composed of layers of gravel, sand, and plant substrate, which allows water retention, filtration and
                   infiltration.
The results indicate that rain gardens contribute to the reduction of flooding, improve water quality
and favor the urban environment. Although it has a higher initial cost than conventional systems,
its long-term benefits make it a sustainable and viable solution for local and regional
                   implementation.
